Weight-loss surgery is a big decision, and it helps to have the right team behind you.
What is bariatric surgery?
Bariatric surgery refers to procedures that support long-term weight loss by making changes to the digestive system. Depending on the procedure, this may involve reducing the size of the stomach, rerouting part of the digestive tract, or both.
These are medical procedures, not cosmetic ones. They’re designed for people who have been unable to achieve or maintain a healthy weight through diet and lifestyle changes alone.
It’s normal to have questions and reservations. Our Melbourne-based team is here to make sure you have the information you need before any decisions are made.
Is bariatric surgery right for everyone?
Weight-loss surgery is not suitable for everyone, and it’s not a decision to be made lightly. Suitability depends on a range of factors, including your current weight, overall health, medical history, and what you have already tried.
A consultation with Dr Winnett will look at your full health picture to determine which options are appropriate for your circumstances, including whether a non-surgical approach may be a better fit.
Our bariatric procedures
Our Melbourne-based clinic offers a full range of weight-loss approaches, including bariatric surgeries. We’ll advise you on which option, if any, best suits your individual health needs and goals.
Gastric sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy)
The stomach is reduced to around 20% of its original size. One of the most commonly performed weight-loss surgeries.
Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y)
The stomach is divided into a small pouch connected directly to the small intestine. Often recommended for people with significant weight to lose or obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes.
Mini Gastric Bypass (OAGB)
A simpler variation of the gastric bypass with a single connection point. A commonly chosen option for people who want the metabolic benefits of a bypass with a less complex procedure.
Gastric Band (LAP-BAND®)
An adjustable band is placed around the upper stomach to restrict food intake. A reversible option for people who prefer a less permanent surgical approach.
Gastric Balloon (Orbera®)
A non-surgical option where a soft balloon is placed in the stomach to reduce capacity. Suited to patients at the earlier stages of their weight-loss journey or those not yet ready for surgery.
What to know before you commit
Bariatric surgery is a significant medical procedure, and like all surgery, it carries risks. Dr Winnett will walk you through all relevant risks during your consultation.
Long-term results also depend on lasting changes to how you eat and live. Our team is here to support you before and after surgery to help you sustain these habits.
Follow-up appointments are part of our care, with check-ins scheduled every three to six months as needed.
Your weight-loss journey with us
Every patient’s path is different. We follow a clear, supportive structure so you always know what to expect.
Before treatment
Your journey always begins with two steps:
- An initial consultation with Dr Winnett, where you’ll discuss your health history, goals, and concerns, and …
- A personalised assessment to determine the best pathway for you, which may include surgery, weight-loss medications, or both.
If bariatric surgery is recommended, you’ll be prepared thoroughly beforehand, with dietary and lifestyle guidance in place well before your procedure date.
During treatment
For patients who proceed to surgery, you’ll be in experienced hands. Dr Winnett has performed over 3,000 weight-loss surgeries and 15,000 endoscopic procedures. He’s known for his calm, patient-first approach in and out of the operating theatre.
After treatment
You’ll check in with our team every three to six months. We’ll monitor your progress and help you sustain the habits and routines that make your results last.
